“1/4 scale” describes the doll’s general size category; it doesn’t standardize the shape or width of its eye sockets. Two dolls in the same scale can need different eyes. A sculpt with narrow openings may suit 12 or 14 mm eyes, while a wider opening may accommodate 16 mm or, in some cases, 18 mm eyes.
Eye size affects the expression. Larger eyes can create a bright, wide-eyed look, while smaller eyes may appear more subtle or leave more room around the iris. The iris design matters, too: two pairs of the same diameter can look quite different if one has a larger iris or a thicker rim.
Start with the doll maker’s stated eye size, if available. If you’re shopping for a secondhand doll or can’t find a recommendation, measure the eye opening and compare it with the eye seller’s sizing guidance. If you’re between sizes, consider the style you prefer and whether the eyes can be adjusted in the head. Putty or another doll-safe eye-setting material can help position eyes, but it won’t make an eye that is substantially too large fit comfortably.
